Paul Robeson portrays Brutus Jones, an arrogant,
strong-willed braggart who rises from Pullman porter to autocrat. He seizes power on a Caribbean island, proclaiming himself “King Brutus” and finally “Emperor Jones.” But his days of glory are short-lived and his fall is as meteoric as his rise. This production, first released in 1933 and rereleased in 1980, is directed by Dudley Murphy and William deMille. Based on the play by Eugene O’Neill, and also starring Dudley Digges, with Moms Mabley in a bit part.
