After a brief review of absolute rule by ancient kings and emperors, this film sets forth the concept of absolute rule by divine right in the words of James I of England and by re-enactments of the court of Louis XIV. The seventy-two year reign of the “Grand Monarch” amid the splendor of Versailles carried to its heights the political philosophy that shaped Europe’s destiny in the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
