In Abidjan, Ivory Coast, as in most African cities, there are great contrasts of culture, life-style, and economic well-being.  The dichotomy between the poor and the wealthy - and between old and new - is represented in Abidjan by two distinct areas.  On the Plateau live most of the Europeans, who are descendants of the French colonialists, and the wealthier Africans.  In overcrowded Treichville live most of the other inhabitants, who still retain most of their ancient beliefs and customs.  Abidjan typifies the combination of the traditional beliefs of an older culture and with the new ideas of modern African society.
