Robin Lehman's Ocean Life CollectionFeaturing: Undercurrents (1973) • Sea Creatures (1974) • Nightlife (1976) • See (1975)
Produced and Directed by: Robin Lehman • General AudiencesRobin Lehman exhibits a true artistic presentation with all the hypnotic and strangeness of the depths below and the life that inhabits it. In this collection containing four films, he takes a look at the vast differences and similarities between life in the ocean spanning from the Red Sea all the way to Ireland's coastal waters. What makes these films exemplary is the delicate and thoughtful use of ambient music intertwined with familiar sound effects which heightens the mood and scenes. A key to note is that all films, with the exception of “Sea Creatures”, have no formal narrative. In fact, a narrative for some of these films would probably be a disservice considering how well they work in their own right. I was particularly amused with the close up footage of unusual fish, crabs as they moved and drifted along the sea bed, and how the reefs and sea urchins worked together. The amount of wit and drama found in these films give quite the theatrical performance; one that can be reveled in by both young and old. If you're looking for a strict narrative exploration of ocean life, however, I still would suggest considering these films. Not only do I think these would fit well in a Life Science/Biology curriculum, I also think these should be considered for Music and Art appreciation.
